In June, we made a commitment to listen, learn, and
to do the work necessary to take action against
inequality and racial justice. Last summer, Nautica
and our parent company, SPARC Group, created SPARC
IDEAS, an internal task force that is dedicated to
making sure Inclusion, Diversity, Equality, Awareness,
and Support are at the forefront of the decisions we
make and the way we operate as an organization.

This February, we're introducing you to some of the
faces behind SPARC IDEAS who are making waves and
leading the charge to create positive change, both in
our company and our communities.

FEATURING

LOU
HARRIS

Born and raised in New York, Harris is a self-taught surfer who questioned the stereotype, wanting to make the demographic of his favorite hobby look more like the world around him. Observing inner city youth who needed a constructive outlet, he founded the East Coast Chapter of the Black Surfing Association, and has since taught kids of all races and background how to have a positive relationship with the ocean right in their own backyard.

@surflou22

Originally founded in California in 1975, this nonprofit organization teaches free swimming and surfing lessons to youth who may not have the opportunity to develop a relationship with the water. In 2020, Lou Harris and the Black Surfing Association used their organization and the beaches of the Rockaways, New York, to make peaceful statements in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. The paddle outs have drawn hundreds including world-class surfers, celebrities, and a wave of positive media attention.
